ANGELIC carol singing raised the rafters of the Honeysuckle Markets building during a weekend Christmas concert which was the first of its kind.

The internationally acclaimed Waratah Girls Choir joined the Hunter Strings, conducted by David Banney, to present the Honeysuckle Markets Gala Christmas Concert on Saturday evening.

Compered by John Church, the concert featured soprano Kathryn Graham, baritone Graeme Hands, and head of the string department at the Newcastle University Conservatorium of Music Elizabeth Holowell.

One of the organisers Wynette Horne said the atmosphere was "magical", as the musicians delivered a mixture of classic arrangements and Christmas carols.

"We had a very responsive audience and I hope that we can do it again," Mrs Horne said.
